We are proud to invite you to the 1st BioINSouth Forum that will take place on 5-6 June 2025 at Aula Magna, University of Catania, Piazza dell’Università, Catania, Italy. This event brings together leaders and experts from various sectors and disciplines from South Europe and beyond, to discuss and outline the R&I priorities in bioeconomy, in conjunction with the particularities of the South European regions.
Organised under the workplan of BioINSouth project cofunded by the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) and the EU, the event will focus on the regional aspects of bioeconomy, and the development of R&I strategies and policies.
The 1st BioINSouth Forum, is an official Partner Event of the EU Green Week 2025 – Circular Solutions for a Competitive EU.
This year’s Green Week will unpack the “three Cs” – Clean, Competitive & Circular – exploring how to put circularity at the centre of our economic transition. With its potential to drive sustainable competitiveness, reduce waste, increase strategic autonomy and promote innovation, a circular economy offers solutions to some of Europe’s most pressing challenges.
Key themes and topics
With unique insights from the CBE JU Work Programme team, and national/regional players and policymakers in the field of bioeconomy, the 1st BioINSouth Forum is a must-attend for anyone interested in:
🔶 the future of sustainable development
🔶 regional bioeconomy initiatives across Southern Europe
🔶 the pivotal role of regions for shaping sustainable and eco-conscious practices
🔶 showcasing their experience and results in bioeconomy related endeavours
🔶 efficient networking and exchange of ideas with policymakers, researchers and industrial actors
Agenda
The event will feature discussions on the bioeconomy from a global perspective, regional initiatives across Southern Europe, and the integration of circular bioeconomy practices to reconcile economic growth with societal and environmental well-being. Our contributing linked projects
ADVagroMED is a sustainable farming initiative that harnesses insect-based solutions tailored to Mediterranean climates. It uses black soldier fly and yellow mealworm larvae to convert agricultural by-products into valuable resources. The larvae serve as high-protein poultry feed, while the frass is repurposed as organic fertilizer. This project unites partners across Southern Europe and North Africa under the Horizon 2020 PRIMA program to promote circular agro-ecology. See the pitch presentation and learn more!
BIO2REG is a Horizon Europe project that supports the transformation of GHG-intensive regions into circular bioeconomy model regions. It brings together nine partners and a broader European network to co-develop a normative framework and practical support tools that foster regional cooperation, stakeholder engagement, and capacity building. BIO2REG promotes interregional exchange, establishes a dedicated network, and highlights best practices for regionally adapted transition pathways. The project offers tailored services to help regions assess their bioeconomy potential and supports them through mentoring, training, and peer learning—ensuring that regional contexts, challenges, and stakeholder needs are central to every transition process. One example is BioökonomieREVIER in Germany’s Rhenish mining area, where actors collaborate on developing bio-based value chains, such as plant-based fibres and the cascade use of safflower. BIO2REG delivers transferable approaches to implement guide regional bioeconomy strategies across Europe. Learn more here!
